Figure skating isn’t just for kids! Many adults enjoy the various aspects that figure skating offers whether they skate just for fun, challenge themselves with testing, or take their place on center ice in competition.

CFSC has a vibrant adult skating community comprised of both skaters who became adults and adults who became skater. We are always looking to welcome more adult skaters. Come join us!

Adult Skating

USFSA defines an adult skater as being 18 years of age or older. Most aspects of skating apply equally to adults, so if you are new to skating and looking for more information about figure skating in general, please visit our Get Started and Next Steps pages. That being said, there are some components of adult skating that are geared towards those 21 and older.

Adult-specific testing begins at 21 with the adult testing track. However, standard track testing is open to skaters at any age, so a 21+ skater is not required to test the adult track; they are free to test standard track as long as they like. This also means that adults (18+ year olds) who are not yet 21 and are wanting to test can do so on the standard track. Once they turn 21, they can switch over to the adult track at whatever point they are (i.e. they do not need to start the adult track from the beginning), or they can simply continue on the standard track. For more information about adult testing, please visit the Adult Testing page.

Most competitions, with the clear exception of the Adult Competition series for beginning adults, require adult skaters to be 21 or older unless they have “young adult” events which are for skaters aged 18-21. Furthermore, many International Skating Union events require adult skaters to be 28 years or older.

In addition, some competitions include Masters events. These events are for adult skaters who have passed high-level national tests. As such, Masters level events begin at the Adult Intermediate level (see Adult Testing for more information).
