There are three categories of competition available to figure skaters: Compete USA, nonqualifying competitions and qualifying competitions. Compete USA competitions are geared towards beginning skaters. Qualifying competitions are essentially the preliminary rounds to U.S. National competitions for which a skater must qualify. Nonqualifying competitions make up the bulk of competitions a skater will enter throughout the year and allow a skater to gain valuable competition experience.
All USFS-sanctioned competitions except Compete USA require the skater to be a member of USFSA. Compete USA competitions require the skater to be a Learn to Skate member if they are not a USFSA member.
Our skaters participate in several competitions throughout the year – and it’s always more fun to go with friends! Some of the competitions our skaters typically participate in are shown below.
If you or your skater is interested in participating in any of these, or any other, competitions, talk to your coach. She/He will be happy to help you figure out which competitions and events are best for you or your skater.

Compete USA
Compete USA events provide beginning skaters, including adults, an opportunity to experience competitions in a fun and rewarding way. They are a great introduction to the world of competition and are available to all skaters who are members of Learn to Skate or USFSA. These competitions offer events for all beginner skill levels from Snowplow Sam to Basic Skills and adult levels 1 through 6. Events offered include compulsory moves, free skate, jumps, and spins, just to name a few. Competitors are grouped by skill level with no more than 6 skaters per group, with every skater receiving an award. For more information on levels, events, requirements, and how to find a competition, visit USFSA’s Compete USA page or the LTS Compete USA page.
