Most people who have enjoyed skating casually and decide they want to try it out more seriously begin by joining a Learn to Skate (LTS) USA program. This program offers a standardized curriculum designed to help skaters of all ages and abilities master the basics of skating. It includes specially designed pathways for preschoolers, kids, adults, and skaters with disabilities, ensuring that everyone can learn how to ice skate..

The Learn to Skate program is run by the South Charleston Memorial Ice Arena. While many of the club’s coaches and skaters help teach these classes, CFSC has no official connection to the Learn to Skate program. The LTS information is provided here solely as a way to encourage and support participation in the sport of figure skating. Information about the latest LTS session can be found on the SCMIA website.

Learn to Skate sessions generally run from early September through mid May. Each session is 6 weeks long with a choice between taking classes either on Saturday morning from 11:00 to 12:00 or Sunday evening from 4:45 to 5:45. Each class lasts 60 minutes, with 30 minutes of instructional time in a group setting and 30 minutes of individual practice time.

Classes are divided by skill level and age. Children aged six and under with no prior skating experience are generally placed in Snowplow Sam classes where they build confidence on the ice through play. Once all four levels of Snowplow Sam have been passed, the skater can move on to the basic skills classes.

Basic skills classes are designed for kids over the age of six who have no prior skating experience. Kids will work their way through six progressive levels of basic skills classes where they learn the key fundamentals of ice skating. Kids who have some prior skating experience will be assessed to determine at which level they should begin.

Adult classes are designed for both beginning and experienced adults and older teens. The six levels of adult classes teach proper skating technique while promoting physical fitness and helping to improve coordination and balance.

The last class of each session is dedicated to testing. The testing is carried out by the skating instructor in an informal way and is the determining factor in advancing to the next level. It is important to keep in mind that everyone develops skills at their own pace, so it is not uncommon for a skater to spend multiple sessions at the same level. The goal is to ensure the development of a solid foundation which cannot be rushed – and to have fun!

All Learn to Skate students are also given a pass for six free public skating sessions. Take advantage of these! There are public sessions every day after school and several on the weekends. The only way to improve skating skills is with practice!

The cost of the Learn to Skate sessions also includes a membership in Learn to Skate USA.

Skaters involved in Learn to Skate are always invited to participate in the club’s Holiday Showcase and Spring Showcase as part of an LTS group number. In addition, skaters interested in competing are able to do so as LTS skaters, although this would require them to take private lessons with a coach. Visit our Coaches page for more information about our coaches and how to get in touch with them.
