Typically, a skater wears a simple black skating dress with skin-tone tights for testing. A more elaborate competition/show dress can be worn, but it’s best not to wear anything too extravagant or flashy so as not to distract from the test itself. The primary exception to this guideline is for the higher-level dances. Since these dances are themed to specific styles of dance (waltz, tango, blues, etc.), it’s a good idea to wear a dress that represents that style.

Alternatively, it’s acceptable to test in an all-black practice outfit, black leggings and a black form-fitted shirt, particularly for a skating skills test. It is also acceptable to wear a jacket and gloves during the test – regardless of what is being worn underneath. The jacket should be black and form-fitting, and the gloves should be either skin-tone or black.

Testing dresses can easily be found online with a quick internet search or purchased from a skating shop. Bear in mind that it isn’t necessary to purchase a dress that is only used for testing. If you already have a dress, go ahead and use that, even if it doesn’t quite fit the guidelines provided above – there’s no need to make skating even more expensive than it is!
