Accessories

As with any sport, there are a lot of accessories available for figure skating. Included here is a list of the most common and most useful – in other words, the items most likely to be found in a skater’s bag or locker. While this is by no means an exhaustive list, it is a good starting point.

Guards

While most of the accessories listed here are completely optional, guards are highly recommended as they protect your blades, one of the biggest investments you’ll make in this sport. Guards should be worn anytime you have your skates on and are not on the ice. They come in a variety of styles and colors which are accompanied by a wide range in price. Any guard designed for figure skates will do the job – everything else is personal preference.

Soakers

As with guards, soakers are highly recommended to help protect your blades while they are being stored. As the name implies, they absorb (or soak up) any moisture left on the blades so they don’t rust. Soakers also come in a wide variety of styles which, as with guards, are a matter of personal preference.

Towel

An absorbant towel is also a must to help protect both the boots and the blades. It should be used after every skating session to wipe off any moisture before storing your skates. Any absorbent towel will do.

Laces

It’s always a good idea to have an extra pair of laces on hand, especially at competitions and in-person tests. Make sure you know the correct length for your boots.

Rink Tote

Many skaters find it convenient to use a tote to carry basic rink-side essentials. This is a small bag with a wide, flat bottom that easily holds everything a skater likes to keep handy including a water bottle, tissues, lip balm, gloves, their phone, and ear buds for practicing programs and dances.

Additional items you’re likely to want to keep close at hand are listed below.
