All but the first test in most disciplines (exceptions are Pairs, Solo Free Dance and Standard Partnered Free Dance) are given a numerical score where zero (0) indicates an element was skated as expected for the given level. A negative number is assigned for sub-standard skating and a positive number for above average skating. In order to pass the test, the skater’s total score must be 0 or higher. The skater does not have to “pass” each element or component as they can “make up” for a lower score in one area by getting a higher score in another. There is also the possibility for skaters to pass these tests with either Honors or Distinction if they score particularly well.
Those tests that are not given a numerical score will simply be marked with Pass, Retry, or Honors.
Note that for all tests with a 3-judge panel, only 2 of the judges must pass the skater in order for the skater to pass the test.
Additionally, all tests should include comments from the judges. These comments can both highlight a skater’s strong areas and be helpful in identifying areas that need work. As such, the comments should be used as a tool for developing the skater’s instructional plans moving forward.
In the case of a Retry, for most tests, the skater will not be eligible to test again until the 13th day after the test date. There are some tests for which the skater only need wait until the next day to be eligible again.
Note that any given test may not be tested more than once per calendar day. The chart below shows when each test may be retested.

It is highly recommended that you keep the test papers for all tests taken – especially those that were passed – just in case you were ever to need them to verify the skater’s level. This can be easily done by creating a Skating binder and putting all test results in it.
